Don’t you love that ancient practices are resurfacing again? I sure do. This simple, self care ritual has been around for centuries and it is a total game changer for your overall health! Our ancestors sure knew a thing or two about well-being! All you need is a dry brush and a few minutes to start reaping benefits.
What is Dry Brushing?
Dry brushing is exactly what it sounds like. You use a dry bristle brush and brush small strokes on your skin going with the flow toward your heart. Brushing in upward, circular motions, typically before a shower, not only works wonders for your body but comes with some amazing skin benefits too! When you do this practice, you are stimulating and working with the flow of your lymph system, which has close ties with immune health.
Benefits of Dry Brushing
1. Lymphatic Drainage: Unlike other systems in the body, the lymph system has no pump to keep things moving along. The lymph system relies on YOU to assist in getting the job done. This means activity, movement, and deep breathing all get things flowing and moving where they need to go. A great way to support this is dry brushing. It will keep your immune system in check and give you a detoxifying boost.
2. Relaxation and Self Care: Dry brushing activates your parasympathetic nervous system. When you dry brush you are stimulating your vagus nerve. This sends calming messages to your brain. If dealing with a lot of stress and anxiety- this can be a simple add on to your nightly routine. Pair it with some essential oils for extra relaxation!
3. Exfoliation: Dry brushing sloughs off dead skin cells, leaving your skin silky smooth and glowing. Plus, it helps unclog pores so your skin can breathe.
4. Boosts Circulation: The gentle brushing action stimulates blood flow, which can make you feel more energized, and give your skin a glow.
5. Reduces Cellulite: While this is not a magic cure at all, dry brushing can smooth and tighten the skins appearance, making cellulite less noticeable. Dry brushing is also great for its beauty benefits. It exfoliates your dry skin and unclogs your pores. If you add this in at least three days a week, your skin will thank you. You may begin to see quick improvements in your complexion.
How to Dry Brush:
Choose the right brush: Look for a natural bristle with a long handle so you can reach your back! Here is my favorite one from everyone’s favorite place- amazon! Click here to check it out!
Start at your feet: Begin at your feet and brush upward toward your heart in long strokes. For arms, start at your hands and work upward.
Be gentle: dont brush too hard! It should not be too uncomfortable. The bristles do all the work!
Focus on troubled areas: spend extra time on cellulite or rough skin!
Shower Afterward: rise off the dead skin cells in the shower. For an extra bonus add some epsom salt to a bath. the magnesium stimulates detoxification and a warm bath will help open up those pores.
